Stanbridge East Fire Department
At the service of the community
The Stanbridge East Fire Department is made up of twenty voluntary firemen, under the direction of Todd Girard, Fire Chief. Their role is to protect lives and property in the event of a fire and to intervene in the event of a disaster. More and more, the Fire Department is called upon to play an important role in the prevention of fires. History
Town records going back to 1890 do not mention the existence of a Fire Department until August 1911, when Charles Edward Blinn, Mayor of Stanbridge East, set up a committee to “study the fire pump question”.
The first fire station was a blacksmith shop, then later moved to Mr. A. Hodge’s store. In February 1945 a motion was made by the Town Council to “buy a fire pump”. Arrangements were made to store the equipment at the plant of Champlain Milk Products in Stanbridge East.
In January 1959, under Mayor Donald C. Blinn, the Volunteer Fire Department was formed with Gustave Broeckaert as fire chief. In the spring of 1959 the lower half of the Town Hall was remodelled into a Fire Station and in 1964 was expanded. More equipment and men were added to make the status of four vehicles and twenty-four men.
Throughout the years the Fire Department has remained active in community events. It was the primary organizer of the Centennial Celebration in 1967 and carries on to this day with the annual July 1st BBQ and picnic.
